WVU Now 3-0

Well, I wouldn't have guessed it but the Mountaineers are 3-0 and have 2 of their toughest games behind them. Unless Pitt rises from the ashes, the only major roadblocks left are Virginia Tech and Louisville. Still too early to talk BCS or Big East Champion or anything, but at least some people are taking notice that we're not Rutgers this year.

My fear is that Syracuse isn't that good (although they nearly beat a good Virginia team) and Maryland is average this year (picked 5th in the ACC). But both games were good road wins regardless...in two very tough venues to play. And, we get Virginia Tech and Louisville at Mountaineer Field. That's always a plus.

Our passing game versus Maryland was non-existent. 8 for 11 is good but only 86 yards in the air. 301 on the ground is awesome but I don't think we can continue that without some more air support. Owen Schmitt is awesome. He led the Mountaineers in rushing against Maryland which means that in the first 3 games, a running back still hasn't had the most running yards in a game. (Schmitt is the fullback.) Gwaltney is improving week-by-week and is going to be a beast.

The defense only gave up 50 rushing yards. And 291 passing yards...which isn't good. But 73 of those yards came on one play. Tackling as a little sloppy when they let the Terps back into the game. But after that, they were back to the normal hard hitting. And they were making some receivers pay for getting too close to the ball at the end. I liked that.

Overall, it was a good game. Anytime you can go to Maryland and come back with a win, it's huge. With the win, we're now in the position of a contender in the Big East. Next week we get a depleted East Carolina team which should be a chance to work on the passing game and secondary a bit in preparation for Virginia Tech. I just want to see someone take Vick's head off and serve it to me. I'll be in Section 217...just bring it up.
